Culpepper, AL
Wilcox County
In 1837, two descendants of Erasmus Culpepper (1744-1783) of North
Carolina settled in this immediate area: his son, Erasmus Culpepper, Jr. (1782-1855) and
his grandson, Benjamin Culpepper (1795-1860), who was the son of Osborne Culpepper
(1770-1807). Erasmus was issued six separate land patents in 1837 for a total of 644 acres
of land. He later acquired more land in the area through further land patents in Wilcox
and neighboring Clarke County. The town is most probably named for these early settlers.
