1870 Census*1 Jun 1870 Alonzo was listed as the head of a family on the 1870 Census at Greensboro, Hale Co., Alabama. The census record did not make it clear which school the Culpeppers were attending. However, since they were sons of a prosperous family in nearby Wilcox County, most likely they were attending Greene Springs School, which operated from 1847 to 1884 as one of the State's academies. Called "Rugby" of the South, it prepared a number of Alabama leaders and was one of the first schools to add the study of science and government to the usual classics. (A historical marker for this school is located on Alabama Highway 60).4

His beautiful handwriting and signature are forever a part of the county's history. It is sad that he died a young man while attending medical American Medical College in St. Louis.1
