DNA* James has been proven by DNA and genealogical research to be a descendant of William Culpepper of Warren Co., GA (born c1727), a son of Robert Culpepper, Jr., who is a grandson of Henry Culpepper of Lower Norfolk, VA.

Civil War*between 1861 and 1865 He served in the War Between the States between 1861 and 1865

     James enlisted as a second sergeant in the "Beauregard Volunteers," Company C, Sixth Georgia Regiment, under General Joseph E. Johnston. He served four years in the Confederate Army. In 1864 he succeeded in capturing Brigadier General Rutherford B. Hayes and his aide, Lieutenant Brady, and was commissioned a major. After these two surrendered, Major Culpepper with fifty men captured the enemy brigade; and he himself seized three stands of colors and a sword of the officer next in command to General Hayes. Obituary:
Maj. J. Monroe Culpepper died at his home in Fort Valley, GA on 29 Jun 1901. Burial was in the Oaklawn Cemetery in Fort Valley. He was 67 years old and was a soldier in the Confederate War.
