Biography* | Marion Elton 'Pete' Culeppper was the son of James Benjamin and May (Dodd) Culpepper. He was born and raised in Hopkins Co., TX where he was noted living with his parents in 1910 and 1920 census records. Since, according to Social Security records, Pete had a Railroad Retiree number issued before 1951, he must have worked for a railroad, presumably before World War II. According to his son, Joe, Pete was a career Army man. He would have been 33 years old when the United States entered World War II on December 8, 1941. In 1942, Pete married Maurice Ernestine Dulin and then went off to war. In 1943, Pete lost an eye while opening a box of grenades for his platoon while training for the invasion of Normandy.13 After the War, Pete was stationed at Fort Dix, NJ and then he was assigned to the 4th Army in San Antonio, TX.13 In 1947, Pete received a medical discharge from the Army as a Top Sergeant.13 Pete and his wife then settled down to raise their young family in the San Antonio, TX area, both finding work as civilians for nearby Kelly Air Force Base and then Brooks Air Force Base.13 Pete retired from Civil Service and died in San Antonio, TX at the age of 71. |
