Although the obituary clearly gives her date of birth and death and calculates her age at death, marriage and census records indicate that she was probably born before 1834, probably in 1832. If Louraney had been born in 1834, she would have been 14 years old when she married, not impossible for the times, but unlikely since no parent gave permission for the marriage based on the marriage record. Also, two years later, in the 1850 census, Louraney was listed as being 18 years old which would suggest a birth year of 1832. In the 1860 census, she age was listed as being 27 years of age, which, depending on when the census was taken, could still support an 1832 date of birth or an 1833 date of birth. In the 1870 census, her age was given as 39, which would suggest an 1830 or 1831 year of birth. Finally, in the 1880 census, Louraney's age was given as 45. This would suggest a date of birth of 1834 or 1835. Louraney was probably born in 1832.
Although Louraney had been born in Georgia, by 1848 she had moved, presumably with her parents, to Chambers Co., AL since this is where she married. She is found in the 1850 census of Chambers Co., AL with her husband. By 1860, Robert Jefferson and Louraney had moved their family to Randolph Co., AL where they remained until after the 1870 census. By the 1880 census the family had moved on to Clay Co., AL where "Lurana" was recorded with her husband, R. J. Culpepper, and younger children in Wesobulga Beat 4. According to Mary Lillian Butler Pierce, Louraney and Robert Jefferson moved with their son, John James Culpepper, to the Sand Mountain area of Marshall Co., AL. Some of the extended family settled across the county line in Joppa, Cullman Co., AL. Since the 1890 U. S. census burned we do not know exactly where everyone was situated at this point but according to her obituary, Louraney died in 1894 while living with or visiting children and grandchildren who were living in Joppa, Cullman Co., AL. The following obituary preserved by great-granddaughter, Mrs. J. E. (Ann White) Hicks, is from an unknown source: CULPEPPER -- Miss Louraney Cardwell was born June the 8th 1834 [1832? based on presumed age at marriage and census records] and was married to R. J. Culpepper Dec. the 19th 1848, and died at her home, near Joppa, Cullman County, Ala. Jan. the 2nd 1894, aged 59 [61?] years, 6 months and 25 days. Mrs. Culpepper joined the Methodist Church South in 1872, and from that time on, she lived an humble, christian life. She dearly loved her church, and was untiring in her efforts to promote the cause of Christ. Mrs. Culpepper was the mother of eleven children, two have preceded her to the Heavenly Land, while nine are left to mourn their loss, but their loss is her eternal gain, for she has gone where sorrow, pain, sickness and death are felt and feared no more. Her life was an exemplary one, she was a loving wife, a kind and gentle mother. She will be sadly missed at home, at church and in the nieghborhood, she was loved by all who knew her. The writer has known her for several years and to know her was to love her. We tender our heart-felt sympathy to the bereaved family. A. S. A. Meaders
Only ten of the eleven of the eleven children have been accounted for. Possibly one child died at birth or died young and between census years. Finally, Louraney's daughter, "Plyna Smith" (Mrs. L. W. (Pauline Culpepper) Smith), was listed in an article about a 1935 John James Culpepper family reunion with "aunt Fanny Busby" (Mrs. H. B. (Nancy Ann Frances Elizabeth Alice Culpepper) Busby) of Albertville. This was a daughter of William Washington and Ferby (Cardwell) Culpepper.
