Robert S. Culpepper
Male, #21, (1845 - 22 Nov 1929)
|Father*||Reuben Culpepper of Mecklenburg Co. NC (c 1821 - )|
|Mother*||Mary Frances (?) (c 1828 - )|
|Birth*||1845||Robert was born at Portsmouth, Norfolk Co., Virginia, in 1845.|
|1850 Census||1 Jun 1850||Mary, Robert and William listed as a household member living with Reuben Culpepper of Mecklenburg Co. NC on the 1850 Census on 1 Jun 1850 at Portsmouth, Norfolk Co., Virginia.1|
|1860 Census||1 Jun 1860||Mary, Robert, William, Ada, Sherwood and Rena listed as a household member living with Reuben Culpepper of Mecklenburg Co. NC in the 1860 Census at Jackson Ward, Portsmouth (city), Virginia.2|
|Civil War*||between 1863 and 1865||He served in the War Between the States between 1863 and 1865|
From his Confederate pension application, we learn that Robert was employed at the beginning of the Civil war "in the Gosport Navy Yard, but upon the evacuation of Portsmouth by the Confederates, this company of men were sent to Charlotte, North Carolina and employed there by the Government in the manufacture of Ordnance Stores, then these men were organized into a Military Battalion, and were frequently called from their post of duties to repel raiding armies of the enemy.
"With the falling of Richmond, President Davis started sourthward and upon arriving at Charlotte, North Carolina, his train also bearing the specie which was in the Confederate Treasury in Richmond, volunteers from the above Military Battalion were called to escort this specie to the Army of General Kirby Smith. 60 of these men volunteered for that service, including Robert S. Culpepper, the applicant for pension."3
|1870 Census||1 Jun 1870||Mary, Robert, William, Ada, Sherwood and Rena listed as a household member living with Reuben Culpepper of Mecklenburg Co. NC on the 1870 Census at Charlotte, Mecklenburg Co., North Carolina.4|

|Death*||22 Nov 1929||He died at Portsmouth (city), Virginia, on 22 Nov 1929|
The source for this date of death is unknown, and the date is probably in error since Robert appeared six months later in the 1930 census. There is no other likely person that the census record could refer to. At Findagrave.com (Memorial# 53053799), the 22 Nov 1929 date of death appears, but the photo there of Robert's tombstone simply says "R. S. Culpepper, CSA". Perhaps he died 22 Nov 1930.7
|Burial*||circa 24 Nov 1929||His body was interred circa 24 Nov 1929 at Oak Grove Cemetery, Portsmouth (city), Virginia.|
|1930 Census*||1 Apr 1930||Robert was listed as an uncle in Albin S. Trant (or Traut)'s household on the 1930 Census. Albin S. Trant (or Traut).8|
