Biography* Keith Guthrie wrote Feb 1991: Shortly after Orin and Eliza were married Daniel, his wife and four other children (George Washington, Zachariah, Rosana, John) headed for Texas. They are listed as DeWitt's colonists in 1831 and received land along the Lavaca and Guadalupe Rivers. Son John fought and died in the Alamo. (Old stories tell that the fine horses that Daniel brought to Texas in 1831 were still to be found around in 1920 when the Model-T put buggies and gaited out of business in Gonzales County.

Biography* Keith Guthrie wrote Feb 1991: I was the youngest child in the family, born in 1918. I got a journalism degree from TCU in 1940, purchased the Harris County News that fall and in 1941 joined the Navy Air Corps, serving almost four years piloting Catalina Flying Boats in the south Pacific. Along the way I married a Navy Nurse, Iris Adkins, and after the war we returned to Tomball and reactivated the Harris County News. After five years we moved to San Patricio County and eventually operated six weekly newspapers out of Taft. We sold out in 1950 and since that time I taught a few years and did a lot of free lance writing and gradually shifted into Texas history. In addition to writing, my wife and I also work with the county Historical Commission and do work in the local museum. I spread yarns about early times to anyone who appears to be interested.
      The following is from the book jacket of Texas Forgotten Ports written by Keith Guthrie and published ($15.95) in 1988 by Eakin Press, P.O. Box 23069, Austin, TX 78735: Keith Guthrie, born in Berclair, Texas, graduated from high school in Goliad in 1935 and from Texas Christian University with a degree in journalism in 1940. Shortly after graduation, he purchased the Harris County News, a weekly newspaper in Tomball, Texas. In 1941 he joined the Naval Air Force and served as a pilot in a squadron of Catalina PBYs. He returned to the States in 1945 as a full lieutenant and received a Distinquished Flying Cross and Air Medal with a bronze star. Guthrie and Lt. (j.g.) Iris Adkins, a navy nurse, were married in Corpus Christi. The Guthries reactivated the Harris County News before taking over the Taft Tribune and Odem-Edroy Times in 1950. During the next twenty years the Guthrie Publishing Co. expanded to include the Portland News, Mathis News, Orange Grove Observer, and Duval County Facts. They sold their publishing business in 1970, and Guthrie devoted his time to teaching journalism and writing for farm publications. Guthrie is active in community affairs, serving as director of a local bank and chairman of the San Patricio County Historical Commission. He is author of History of San Patricio County (1986), over fifty articles for the new edition of the Handbook of Texas, and writes copy for county historical markers. The Guthries have three children and eight grandchildren.
      Dr. Joe B. Frantz wrote about the book Texas Forgotten Ports one of which was Lavaca: The ports from Matagorda south have largely been neglected by the Texas story to our loss. Now comes Keith Guthrie who corrects that oversight. As author-historian, he has never been known to write a careless word or pass sloppy fact. He upholds his reputation in this book. The story of more than a score of Texas ports, mostly forgotten, has now been resurrected by a writer who knows what he is talking about....

Keith Guthrie of Taft died at his home on Sunday after a long illness.
Guthrie was born in Berclair on February 21, 1918. He graduated from Goliad High School in 1935 from Texas Christian University in 1940 with a degree in journalism. After graduation from TCU, he purchased the Harris County News, a weekly newspaper in Tomball, Texas.

In 1941, Guthrie joined the Naval Air Force and served as a pilot in a squadron of Catalina Flying Boats (PBYs). He saw action in the Pacific Theater, flying patrols, air-sea rescue and bombing raids. He returned to the states in 1945 as a full lieutenant, having been awarded the Distinguished Flying Cross and two Air Medals.

Guthrie married Iris Adkins in 1945. Adkins, of North Carolina, was a Navy Nurse when the two met in San Diego. The couple returned to Tomball and reactivated the Harris County News.

Guthrie moved to Taft in 1950 when he purchased the Taft Tribune, Mathis News and the Odem-Edroy Times. He later purchased the Portland News, Duval County Facts and Orange Grove Observer. He sold the newspaper publishing business in 1970 and spent the next 12 years teaching journalism and photography at Gregory Portland High School.

Long interested in Texas history, Guthrie was named chairman of the San Patricio County Historical Commission in 1984. With the assistance of his wife, Guthrie wrote the first complete History of San Patricio County in 1986. A second book, Texas Forgotten Ports, followed in 1989. The book chronicled life on the Texas Gulf Coast in the early 1800’s form Corpus Christi to Matagorda Bay, with special emphasis on the many thriving ports that have since passed into oblivion. In 1990, Kakin Press published Guthrie’s The Legend of Chipita, The Only Woman Hanged in Texas. Based on the success of the first Forgotten Ports book, Guthrie wrote a second and third volume of Texas Forgotten Ports. A two-volume set entitled Armed Conflict in the Raw Frontier and Survival to Prosperity in the Raw Frontier was released in 1998. At the time of his death, the manuscript of an eighth book entitled It Happened in Berclair was nearing completion.

Guthrie was a member of the First United Methodist Church, Taft, the South Texas Historical Association, The Texas State Historical Association, Texas Folklore Society, Corpus Christi Press Club and Byliners. He also served as president of the Taft Blackland Museum.

Guthrie is survived by his wife, Iris, and three children: Bridget Thomas of Ft. Worth, Texas, Lynn Houser of Sinton, Texas, Craig Guthrie of Denver, Colorado, eight grandchildren and four great great grandchildren.

A memorial service is planned for Wednesday, September 15, 2004 at the First United Methodist Church in Taft at 2:30pm.
A private burial is planned at the Oak Hill Cemetery in Goliad.
