Biography* The L. Hoyt Kirk family records show that James Patrick Kirk was born in Georgia, but in the 1880 census, a son, John W. Kirk lists his father has having been born in South Carolina. L. Hoyt Kirk wrote 14 Sep 1992: I was told many years ago that James Patrick Kirk was a small man, and that he has bright blue eyes as did my Grandfather John Wesley Kirk. I was also told that James Patrick Kirk was often called "Happy Jim" as he was always cheerful and happy, but had a temper like a Lion. The men would save eggs through the week and gather on a stream in the mountains on Sunday and boil the eggs and eat them. One Sunday "Happy Jim" did not carry eggs and one of the group said all that did not bring eggs could eat no eggs. When the eggs were poured out in a pan to cool, "Happy Jim" jumped in the pan of eggs with his feet and stomped them all, pulled out his knofe and drew a circle around him standing in the pan of eggs and said, "Anyone who doesn't like it, step into this ring and I will cut you down to my size." No one stepped into the ring.
      L. Hoyt Kirk wrote 15 Oct 1992: The Kirk family were all just poor dirt farmers. My great grandfather, James Patrick Kirk, moved from Buchanan, Haralson County, Georgia to Alabama. He was a farmer.... They [Kirk's] were a happy people. My great grandfather was often called Happy Jim because he was always so jolly and happy. But some of the Kirks had a temper like a tiger. I once heard that my great grandfather, who was so happy and jolly, would fight at the drop of your hat and the reason he moved from Georgia to Alabama was he got in a fight and cut a man in Georgia and was afraid he was going to get in trouble and moved to Alabama.
