His family all had the flu. He went down the rail road and got a bottle of whiskey from a bootlegger for his sick family, stubbed his toe on the way home, and fell on the bottle, it broke and cut him badly and he bled to death. He was born and raised in Clay Co., AL where he was first noted in the 1900 census records of Coleta in Clay Co., AL. Coleta is in the Talladega National Forest on the border between Clay and Talladega Co., AL. It is to the south east of London Mountain where the 150 acre farm owned by Jewel's father was located. In the 1910 census, Jewel was also noted living with his parents.

Jewel worked as a sharecropper and at the Emory Foundry, a cast iron pipe shop, in Oxanna.1 He also sang bass in a quartet with his younger brothers and sisters.2

Jewel was 21 years old when the United States declared war on Germany on April 6, 1917 and he was sent overseas. He served as a courier and unfortunately was injured by gas.1 Gases such as tear gas, chlorine gas and phosgene which are lung irritants, and mustard gas which causes burns, were first used in World War I. The cannister gas mask which was developed could protect soldiers from chlorine gas but could not filter out phosgene or protect soldiers from the blistering mustard gas. Thousands of soldiers died from the gas during the war but the effects of exposure to gas continued to kill soldiers after they returned home.

Jewel returned home and married Evie Ray and the couple was noted living with his parents in the 1920 census. He worked at a Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) camp, at L. B. Price Merchandise, and sold insurance and was eventually able to earn enough to buy five acres of land in Talladega Co., AL on the Ashland Highway beside the Houston Elementary School.1) Jewel and Evie raised eight children. He had blue eyes.3 He was also a Republican and if a driver was rude or careless he would shout "You Democrat!"2
