Father*Michael Culpepper of Maryland
Mother*Eleanor Fidgarrill of Maryland
Name-AltSpell This surname is sometimes spelled Culpeper.
Birth*31 Jan 1708 John was born at Calvert Co., Maryland, on 31 Jan 1708.
Marriage*31 Jan 1732 He married Mary Mitchell at Anne Arundel Co., Maryland, on 31 Jan 1732 at age 24.
Notebetween 1737 and 1744 "John Culpepper", owing "£6 Gold" was included in a schedule of debtors to Richard Hill who assigned these debts to Samuel Preston Moore.2

Note*8 Nov 1744 WOOLFS QUARTER. 40. 0. . 1. . 7 2. Originally so called. Resurveyed for John Culpepper on Nov 8, 1744, beg: for the Vacant land added, it being also the outward bounds of the whole land at a bounded oak standing on a hill, being a bounded tree of land now in possession of Richard Hellen, and also a bounded tree of the land of James Dawkins. Patented Sep 29, 1750.
Note29 Sep 1750 Note above that the Woolfs Quarter Land surveyed for John in 1744 had originally been surveyed for and held by his father, Michael. Yet, it was not patented until 29 Sep 1750. John shows up in a list of Maryland Settlers, with a date of 1750. Presumably, he mistakenly was included on that list because the patent issued that year. Of course, it is also possible that he had traveled abroad and returned to Maryland in that year.3

Mary Elizabeth Williams

Female, #865, (circa 1840 - )
Birth*circa 1840 Mary was born at Virginia circa 1840.1
Marriage*say 1864 She married Charles Artemus Shafer say 1864.
Married Namesay 1864  As of say 1864, her married name was Shafer.
Biography* Glaenda Lane wrote:
"Mary Elizabeth Williams was born about 1840 in Virginia and was in the the 1870 census in Norfolk County Virginia as the wife of Charlie Shafer, born in New York, with four year old Mary E, two year old son Adam and five month old son Woolsey. She does not show up in the 1880 census but Charles has a new wife, Margaret. They had 3 children together and apparently Margaret raised his children from his first marriage. (She also took in stepdaughter Mary E Shafer Culpepper's children when she died.) They had Nancy born 1878, Garfield A born 1880, Ethel born 1887, all in Norfolk County Virginia. Oral history places them in the Deep Creek area. Basing Charlie's second marriage to Margaret on the birth of their first child that would be about 1876 or 77. Mary was alive in the census of 1870 so she died sometime between June of 1870 and 1875 if we assume Charlie waited a decent length of time to remarry. All guesses until we get some documentation. If you are interested in getting more of the extended family for Charles and his children let me know and I'll send you an invitation to view the family tree. It is not my family but that of my sister-in-law. Most of the information is coming from the various census reports."1
