  1. Herbert Culpepper, Co-founder of Pungo Realty

Pungo Realty was founded in 1973 on a handshake between Herbert A. Culpepper Sr. and Nelson Brock in a small office in Downtown Pungo. Since that day, Pungo Realty has posted “for sale” signs on nearly every corner of southern Virginia Beach and Chesapeake. With nearly 40 years of experience, Pungo Realty has earned its reputation as Hampton Roads’ premier “country property specialist.”

Along with Rob Wadsworth and Herb Culpepper, Jr., Pungo Realty has now expanded its reach throughout the Hampton Roads area. Today, its signs are found on lots, homes and commercial properties throughout Virginia Beach, Chesapeake, Norfolk, Suffolk and Northeastern North Carolina.

In addition to brokerage, Pungo Realty also specializes in the development and management of residential and commercial properties. Representative projects include:

•The Pungo Commerce Center: The Pungo Commerce Center features over 11,000 square feet of office space, 10,500 square feet of office warehouses and 8,800 square feet of mini storage space. With its colonial-style architecture and traditional design, the City of Virginia Beach Planning Commission awarded the project the Merit Award for Exceptional Rural Commercial Development in 2005.

•Mansfield Farm: The Mansfield Farm is an upscale 22-lot residential development on the Blackwater Creek in southern Virginia Beach. Mansfield Farms consistently ranks among the highest-valued neighborhoods in Hampton Roads. Its attractive homes and commitment to open-space preservation earned it the Merit Award for Exceptional Alternative Rural Residential Development in 2005.

Pungo Realty’s offices are located on 1771 Princess Anne Rd., Virginia Beach, Virginia, in the heart of Downtown Pungo. While its offices have grown from its humble beginnings, little else has changed. Carolyn Culpepper still manages the office, Herb Sr. still plays cards in the back and Mr. Brock’s portrait still hangs on the wall. Above-all, its values remain the same: Be honest. Be nice. And above all, treat everyone fairly. These values have sustained Pungo Realty’s success in its nearly 40 years of brokerage and development.

"The home they (Sherman and Amanda) acquired from Abraham Atkins in 1860 (built in 1855) is the birthplace of my great grandfather and namesake (Richard Bennett Sims). Sherman named 2 sons (Richard B and Sherman B) for his uncle Bennett, whom I understand wrote an unpublished math text. Our family stories have it that Louisa Nance Bullock benefited from a Revolutionary war commission land grant from her grandfather, and that was the farm in Maysville. Also, I have learned that her children who were orphaned when the father dies and she re-married, won a lot (lot 99, district 5 , Wilkinson Co 1805 lottery) yet the census reports no Sims in subsequent years. Maybe a swap??"1
