1850 Census*1 Jun 1850 Jane was listed as the head of a family on the 1850 Census on 1 Jun 1850 at Richmond Co., Georgia.6
Research note* Robert Culpepper apparently died before 1830 as his wife Jane appears as family head in the 1830 census, and his orphans were winners in the 1832 Georgia Gold Lottery. Since the 1840 and 1850 censuses show children in Jane's household who were born after 1830 (Mary Ann, Julia Ann, and David P.), it is not clear who their parents are. It is possible that Jane was the mother and the father was someone to whom she was not married. Or, these may be orphan children from another Culpepper family. Since the 1850 census does not state relationships, other records are needed to solve this mystery.

Father*Robert Culpepper of Warren Co., GA
Mother*Jane (?)
Extinct Surname?* The family branch headed by William Walker Culpepper is believed to have no living male descendants with the Culpepper surname. If you know otherwise, please contact Lew Griffin using the link at the bottom of this page.
Birth*circa 1829 William was born at Columbia Co., Georgia, circa 1829.1
1830 Census1 Jun 1830 William was probably a free white male, age under 5, in Jane (?)'s houshold, on the 1830 Census at Columbia Co., Georgia.2
Land Lottery1832  The orphans of Robert Culpepper were fortunate drawers in (1) the Georgia Gold Lottery for lot 587/3/3 in what became either Paulding or Cobb Co., GA, and (2) the Georgia Cherokee Land Lottery for lot 66/8/4 in what became Murray Co., GA. in 1832 at Columbia Co., Georgia.3,4
Guardian1 Jan 1838 The court declared William Walker Culpepper to be orphaned after the death of Robert Culpepper of Warren Co., GA and on 1 Jan 1838 at Columbia Co., Georgia,

John W. Maddock is appointed guardian of Sarah Ann Culpepper and William W. Culpepper, minors and orphan children of Robert Culpepper. $1,250 bond posted by John W. Maddock, Isaiah W. Maddock and Robert M. Gunby.5
1840 Census1 Jun 1840 William was probably a free white male, age 10 and under 15, in Jane (?)'s household, on the 1840 Census on 1 Jun 1840 at Columbia Co., Georgia.6

Probate*7 Nov 1864 Probate action was taken on William's estate, with Nancy Culpepper as administrator on 7 Nov 1864 at Columbia Co., Georgia,

Nancy Culpepper, Edward J. Short and Samuel W. Bailey post $4,000 bond for Nancy Culpepper to be administrator of the estate of W. Walter Culpepper, dec’d.10
Research note Robert Culpepper apparently died before 1830 as his wife Jane appears as family head in the 1830 census, and his orphans were winners in the 1832 Georgia Gold Lottery.
If you can help shed light on this, please contact Warren Culpepper.11

Note* Susan Van Ord wrote on 23 Aug 2007:
"I'm a descendent of Cassandra Culpepper, b. Abt 1824 in Franklin Co., GA (I think). Her husband, Thomas F. Hager, went to fight in the Mexican War (1846-47). He was also, by chance, one of the '49ers who walked to California, found nothing and walked back to GA. Anyway, he didn't ever come back from the war. She said he hadn't been kill in the war -- he just didn't want to come back. So she went back to using her maiden name! She had a son named Andrew Culpepper Hager, b. 1853 in GA, d. 19 May 1890 -- probably in Augusta, Richmond, GA. His son, my grandfather, was William Garland Culpepper, but his surname at birth was Hager. Grampa's brother, James Monroe Culpepper, killed a man and Grampa and all his siblings changed their last name to Culpepper until Grampa was able to get Uncle Jim out of the country. Then Grampa went back to "Hager" as did most of the rest of his siblings. The girls used Culpepper until they married.12

Biography*Dec 1906 Albert B. Culpepper, a member of the firm of Culpepper Bros., dealers in furniture, with a well equipped establishment at 1048 Broad street, Augusta, Ga., is one of the representative business men of the younger generation in that city. He was born at Thomson, McDuffie county, Ga., Sept. 22, 1871, his parents being Robert S. and Sophrona J. (Reeves) Culpepper, who still resides in Thomson, which city has been their home for the past forty years. Of their twelve children six died at ages ranging from one month to twenty years. Those living are Churchill C, Albert B., George S., Addie N., John S. and Anna Bell. Churchill C. was born on Aug. 12, 1866, and married Mattie M. Pearson; Addie N. is now the wife of George D. Adams, living at Wrens, in Jefferson county. Albert B. Culpepper acquired his education in the schools of his native town, which he attended until he was eighteen years of age. Upon attaining his legal majority he engaged in business for himself, buying and selling live stock, and also handling railroad ties and other products. He began in a modest way, but as he possessed the true commercial instinct and developed marked initiative power, his success has been cumulative and pronounced. In 1898 he took up his residence in Augusta, where for seven years he held the position of salesman with the furniture house of T. R. Maxwell. In April, 1905, he entered into partnership with his brother, George S. Culpepper, under the firm name of Culpepper Bros., and engaged in the furniture business. The firm is well established in a most eligible location, has a well appointed finely stocked store, and is building up a prosperous and representative trade. In addition to his interest in this enterprise Albert B. Culpepper owns a finely improved plantation of 580 acres in McDuffie county, upon which he produces an average of 85 bales of cotton annually. He purchased this plantation with money which he accumulated by his individual efforts since he reached the age of twenty-one years, and he has the satisfaction of knowing that the place is entirely free from encumbrance. The element of luck has never been permitted to enter into Mr. Culpepper's affairs. Every business proposition is carefully weighed in advance, and when once any enterprise is undertaken it is carried forward with that cool, calculating judgment and business acumen that has marked his entire career. In political matters Mr. Culpepper is an earnest and intelligent supporter of the principles advocated by the Democratic party, but he has never shown any predilection for public office. On Jan. 4, 1905, he was united in marriage to Miss Margaret Allean, daughter of Millard F. Mathis, of Johnson, S. C. They have one daughter, Meryl, born July 3, 1906.1
