Biography* The following obituary was found in the family Bible of Roxanna's parents, George and Mary Oliver: "Roxanna Oliver, daughter of George and Mary Oliver, was born in 1832. Having been deprived of her pious parents at an early age, she fortunately selected her guardian where she was surrounded with the means of grace, in the proper use of which she was powerfully and happily converted at a protracted meeting held by Bros. Major and Moss, at milbury, KY, in 1818 (sic), at which time and place she joined the Methodist Episcopal Church South. On the 19th of Gebruary 1850, she was united in wedlock with the Rev. James L. Culpepper, who was then in charge of the Clinton Circuit. ...'51 they spent on the Randolph Circuit, where they buried their first born and where her health commenced declining. ...'52 they spent on the Hickory Flat Circuit, in Mississippi, where her health so far declined that her husband asked a location that he might giver her his undivided attention in her last days, as it was evident she was sinking with the comsumption, as the entire family had before her. In March last, their interesting little Martha Quigby died with pneumonia just as she was learning to articulate the name of pa and ma. Roxanna lingered in deep affliction, which she was enabled by the grace of God to endure with Christian fortitude, often shouting the high praises of God, and wishing to go home and see her blessed Savior, and meet with sweet friends who had gone before, until the 21st of May, when she quietly and sweetly fell asleep in the arms of Jesus; leaving her devoted and affectionate husband, who had waited by her bedside by day and night for the last six months with hopes blasted and feelings crushed, realizing that, amid earth's teeming millions, he was "solitary and alone" -- Roxanna possessed a dignified person, a retiring disposition, was modest in her deportment, and had a still tongue and an unblemished character, and was loved most by those who knew her best. May we all meet her in Heaven. J. H. Brooks."

Birth*17 Nov 1879 He was born on 17 Nov 1879. The 1880 census clearly lists a son "T. G." Culpepper born in November 1879, and the 1900 census has a son Thomas who was born in November 1879.

There is no evidence for a "J. G." Culpepper or "Joseph G." Culpepper, unless the 1880 census was in error and Joseph G. died young. I formerly listed a son Joseph G., born in November 1879, but with no clear evidence. I have since deleted him, and consider the "T. G." born in Nov. 1879 to have been Thomas G.

However, Thomas G. consistently gave November 1881 as his date of birth, and that is what is listed on his tombstone. If anyone can explain why Thomas thought he was born in 1881, I'd be interested to hear.

Obituary*13 May 2014 Charles "Charley" Culpepper of Raleigh, 85, passed from this world on Saturday, May 10, 2014 with his family by his side.

Charley was born in Little Rock, Arkansas on October 20, 1928. He graduated from North Fulton High School, Atlanta, GA in 1946. He attended college at Southern Methodist University, Dallas TX, and was a member of the Kappa Alpha Fraternity. He graduated from the University of Georgia in 1950. Charley served in the United States Air Force during the Korean War and was stationed at Hickam Field in Honolulu, HI from 1951-1953.

In 1988, Charley retired from Hartford Financial Services of Hartford, CT. after working for 35 years as a certified property casualty underwriter. He also served as the company secretary, an officer, on the Board of Executives.

He is predeceased by his mother and father, James and Mabel Culpepper as well as his brother James all of Dallas, TX.

Charley is survived by his wife of 62 years, Faye Johnson of Brunswick, GA, whom he married on June 27, 1952 in Hawaii. He is also survived by his two daughters, Lucia Keilty and husband Tom of Bethlehem, CT; and Julie Naegelen of Beaufort, NC; as well as his five grandchildren, Chelsea Lawrence of Bogue, NC; Carly Frank of Morehead City, NC; Leah, Ryan, and Samantha Keilty of Bethlehem, CT. Charley is also survived by his one great grandchild, Emma Faye Lawrence.

The family of Charley would like to give a special thanks to Dr. Steven Liebowitz for his care to Charley for over twenty years; his aid, Juanita Seda and Buddy Stegall. The family also wishes to thank Dr. Abrams and the Wake Medical Surgical Trauma Unit, Rex Hospital, and the St. Michael's Episcopal Church parishioners of the Wednesday group.

A Service will be held at St. Michael's Episcopal Church on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at 130 PM with a burial to follow in the garden and a reception in the parish hall. The Reverend Greg Jones will be the officiant for the service. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to St. Michael's Episcopal Church: 1520 Canterbury Rd, Raleigh, NC 27608.7
