Cherokee County

County History and Geography

In the Piney Woods area of east Texas, Cherokee County was formed in 1846 from Nacogdoches County. Its county seat, Rusk, is about 120 miles SE of Dallas and 150 miles north of Houston. Cherokee is bordered by the counties of Smith, Rusk, Nacogdoches, Angelina, Houston, Anderson and Henderson.
