History

English settlers moved up the Great Pee Dee River into this area in the eighteenth century. During the Revolutionary War General Marion's men fought several skirmishes with the British here before retreating to their camp at Snows Island. In the eastern South Carolina part of the Coastal Plains region, Liberty County was created in 1785 as a part of Georgetown District. In 1798, Marion County was formed from Liberty County, and In 1800 Marion became a separate district. In 1868, Marion District was designated Marion County. Parts of Marion later went to form Florence (1888) and Dillon (1910) counties. In the twentieth century Marion County became a major tobacco growing region. Its county seat, the town of Marion, is on US-76, about 100 miles NNE of Charleston and 100 miles east of Columbia. Marion County is bordered by the counties of Dillon, Horry, Georgetown, Williamsburg and Florence.
