History

In the middle South Carolina part of the Sand Hills region, European settlement of this area began around 1718 when the British established a trading post on the Congaree River, which eventually became the town of Granby. Beginning in the 1730s many German, Swiss, and Scotch-Irish immigrants moved into the area and established small farms. This part of the state was first named Saxe Gotha township about 1733.

Lexington County was formed in 1785 from Orangeburg District. In 1791, Lexington County was abolished and merged back into the larger Orangeburg District. It was reformed in 1804 as Lexington District. Granby was the leading town and county seat for many years, but the growth of Columbia across the Congaree led to Granby's decline, and in 1818, the county seat was moved to the town of Lexington, which today is on I-20, about 10 miles west of Columbia, and 60 miles ENE of Augusta, GA. In 1868, Lexington District was designated Lexington County. Small parts of the county later went to form Aiken (1871) and Calhoun (1908) counties. Lexington County is bordered by the counties of Newberry, Fairfield, Richland, Calhoun, Orangeburg, Aiken and Saluda.
