County History and Geography

In the Piedmont Region of north central of North Carolina, Wilkes County was formed in 1777 from Surry County and the District of Washington. Wilkesboro, its county seat, is on US-421, about 50 miles west of Winston-Salem and 70 miles north of Charlotte. Wilkes is bordered by the counties of Alleghany, Surry, Yadkin, Iredell, Alexander, Caldwell, Watauga and Ashe. Few Culpeppers have ever lived in this part of the state.

Early Tax Lists and Other Records

Neither of the following two records can be confirmed by any other Culpepper presence in this part of the state. In fact, the only Culpepper prior to the 20th century who has records in this or any of the neighboring counties was an otherwise unidentified Richard Culpepper who appears in the 1820 census in Iredell County. However, there were Daniel and John Culpeppers both present in Wilkes County, Georgia during the late 1700's, and it seems rather certain that the state was miscoded in these records from the online database at Ancestry.com
