North Carolina Culpepper Archives
Currituck County
County History and Geography
In the Outer Coastal Plain and in the northeastern-most corner of North Carolina, Currituck was formed
in 1668 as a precinct
of Albemarle County. Currituck Court House, mentioned as early as 1755,
was the name of the county seat. Today the words "Court House" have been
dropped and only Currituck is used. It is about 25 miles southeast of
Norfolk, VA. Currituck County is bordered on the east by the
Atlantic Ocean, on the south by Albemarle Sound and
Dare County, on the west by Camden County, and
on the north by old Norfolk Co., Virginia
(now Virginia Beach and Chesapeake).
