County History and Geography

In the Piedmont Region and the southwestern part of North Carolina, Cleveland County was formed in 1841 from Rutherford and Lincoln Counties. Shelby, its county seat, is on US-74, about 40 miles west of Charlotte. Cleveland is bordered by the North Carolina counties of Rutherford, Burke, Lincoln, and Gaston, and the South Carolina counties of Cherokee and York.
