County History and Geography

In the Blue Ridge Region and the southwestern part of North Carolina, Clay County was formed in 1861 from Cherokee County. Hayesville, its county seat, is on US-64, about 5 miles north of the Georgia border and 90 miles southwest of Ashville. Clay is bordered by the North Carolina counties of Cherokee and Macon and the Georgia counties of Union, Towns and Rabun.
