Rankin County
County History
 Rankin
County was formed in 1828 from that portion of Hinds
County lying east of the Pearl River, and was named in honor of
Christopher Rankin, congressman from Mississippi. As early as 1837 it
had a population of 3,255 free whites and 1,956 slaves. The county seat
is Brandon, and the largest city is Pearl. Other towns include Florence,
Flowood, Pelahatchie, Puckett, Richland, Sandhill and Star. Part of the
Jackson, Mississippi Metropolitan Statistical Area, as of 2000, Rankin
County's population was 115,327. Adjacent counties are
Madison County (north),
Scott County (east), Smith County (southeast),
Simpson County (south) and Hinds County
(west).
