Early Culpeper
Immigrants and Travelers

horizontal rule

Published records of pre-20th century ship passengers to America often imply that all such passengers were immigrants. However, there are numerous exceptions:

  1. Many passengers, particularly in the Culpeper family, were merchants conducting business.

  2. Other so-called passengers were given that status based on land grants that they earned through the importation of others into the colonies.

  3. Another did not travel, but was a minister (William, 1634), who, along with four other ministers, gave a certificate concerning a family of passengers (Thomas Hayward of Aylesford in Kent, his wife and five children) that "they have dwelt of their coversion and conformity to the orders and discipline of the Church, and that they have taken the oath of Allegeance and Supremacy according to an order of the Lords of his Majesty's Most Noble privie counsell..."

  4. Some were crew members of a ship.

So such "passenger" or "immigration" records need to be carefully considered within the context of all other known facts.

Date
If land grant,  the date of the grant.
From/To
If land grant, the location of the grant
Person
Generally, an immigrant or traveler, but not in every case.
Further Detail
1634 Did not travel, but issued certificate for a family who traveled on the Hercules from Sandwich to New England William Culpeper
(Minister at Wychling, Kent, later of Barbados)
William has been thought by some to be an immigrant.1 However, a close reading of a different source shows that William was not on the ship. (Also see No. 3 above.) 2
