History

In the Piedmont Region of Georgia, Columbia County was formed in 1790 from Richmond County. Its county seat, Appling, is just north of I-20 about 140 miles east of Atlanta and 20 miles west of Augusta. Columbia is bordered by the Georgia counties of Lincoln, Wilkes, McDuffie and Richmond, and the South Carolina county of Edgefield and McCormick.

1832 Gold Lottery

The names below are only for the 40 acre Gold lots, which were only the southeastern part of the Cherokee land. There was a separate 1932 lottery for the balance of the land (see below). All land was awarded in Cherokee County which was then quickly divided into ten different counties.
