Monroe County
History
Today encompassing
only the Florida Keys and much of the Everglades,
Monroe County was formed in 1823 from
Saint Johns County. In 1887, Monroe's northern
portion was split off to form Lee County. Its county seat,
Key West, is the southernmost point in the US. Monroe is bordered by the
counties of Dade and Collier.
