horizontal rule

History

Lee County was formed in 1866 from Chambers, Tallapoosa, Macon, and Russell counties, and today it is bordered by those counties as well as by the Georgia counties of Harris and Muscogee. The county lies on the eastern part of the Black Belt and is in the Piedmont Region. The county seat is located at Opelika. Other towns and communities include Phenix City, Loachapoka and Auburn, the site of Auburn University. Opelika is on US-85 about 30 miles northwest of Columbus, GA and 65 miles ENE of Montgomery.
