Alabama Culpepper Archives
Henry County
History
Henry County was
created in 1819 from Indian lands. The original county was vast in size, until
its boundaries were reduced by the establishment of the counties of
Pike and Covington in 1821,
by Dale in 1824, by Barbour in
1832 and Houston in 1903. It is part of the
five-county southeastern corner of Alabama known as the Wiregrass, which is part
of the Southeastern Plains Region. Henry is bounded by
Barbour, Dale, and Houston
counties in Alabama and the Georgia counties of Early
and Clay. The county seat is located in Abbeville.
Other towns include Headland and Newville. Abbeville is on US-431 about 30 miles
north of Dothan and 100 miles southeast of Montgomery.
